Educated in carving monumental sized work, we are fortunate to have Canadian Jade Artist Deborah Wilson show us how to carve a jade bangle. A jade carver for over 35 years, Deborah begins by speaking on the general characteristics of jade, nephrite and jadeite. That is, what to expect, and what to look for in selecting a stone for this or any project.
In chapter 2, Deborah gives us an in depth tour and unpacks her large home studio. She calls her shop, “My favorite place in the entire world.” In it, she has any tool one would need for carving stone and it is terrific to hear from her what tool does this and what tool can do that.
Chapter 3 covers the steps needed to layout the bangle project, on paper first, then on the jade.
Chapter 4 presents how to Cut the project. Using a water-fed core drill in a drill press, we see how truly precious the material is. Deborah wastes nothing when cutting out the bangle.
During the last 3 chapters, we learn the techniques of Grinding, Sanding and Polishing that Deborah has collected over the years while working with jade. She has and shares a few sweet licks that are our great fortune to learn from this innovative and generous Jade Artist.
